Employment and Economic
Contributions of New Jersey Fisheries

An estimated 2,706 Full Time Equivalents (FTEs) were directly
involved in commercial fish harvesting in 1998 (This estimate
is based on 1997 NMFS data combined with a number of assumptions
about crew size, vessel activity, and percent part-time
employment).

About 1,078 FTEs were in fish and seafood processing,
100 in aquaculture, 909 in wholesaling and 3,278 in retailing.

The estimated 1998 New Jersey combined annual direct employment
in all sectors of commercial fishing industry is 5,353.
This figure is multiplied by 2.4 for an estimated 12,847
jobs in New Jersey both directly and indirectly attributable
to the state's commercial fish and seafood industry. The
multiplier includes estimates of support workers such
as truckers and suppliers, and their own expenditures.

Another 635 FTEs are associated with the state's marine
recreational fisheries. This yields a combined total statewide
employment of 13,482 jobs attributable to the state's
marine fisheries for 1998.

The estimated direct total payroll for New Jersey commercial
fisheries in 1998 was $130.4 million, over half from the
harvesting and processing sectors.

An estimated of the economic value added was made based
on a multiplier of 6.0. The results is a figure of about
$546 million value added in the commercial fisheries industry
in 1998. The economic value added for the marine recreational
fishery of New Jersey is estimated to be $79 million for1998.

The total contribution of commercial and marine recreational
fishing to New Jersey's economy in 1998 is estimated at
$625 million. This total does not include all federal
(income), state (income and sales) or local (property)
taxes generated. The combined value of such additional
taxes is estimated to exceed $100 million.
